Education & Refugees
Pioneering social change.
Creating real world impact.
Education & Refugees
Partnering with some of the most respected educational institutions and organisations in the country, Salaam Foundation aims to break the educational, cultural and employment barriers refugees face when beginning a new life in Australia.
Education
Refugees often work several jobs to stay afloat, support their families and continue their education.
We provide bursaries to people from asylum-seeker and refugee backgrounds, helping minimise the financial burden of completing their university studies.
Since 2016, we have partnered with a number of leading universities to provide more than 80 years’ of scholarships.
Empowerment
Together with Deakin University’s Centre for Refugee Employment, Advocacy, Training and Education we founded the Salaam Champions Club – a mentorship program for recent and soon-to-be university graduates.
Our participants are paired with mentors who are leaders in their field and given structured guidance on career progression and life choices as well as access to valuable networks and connections.
Since 2020 we have facilitated over 60 mentorships, with more than two-thirds of our participants going on to secure paid employment.
Employment
Through our relationships with the University of Sydney and Community Corporate, we have partnered with more than 40 companies, including IKEA, BGIS and Woolworths, to provide employment and skills training to refugees.
Our donations are further matched by companies committed to hire and up-skill refugees.

We discuss her more difficult experiences, like the discrimination she had to contend with as an Afghan refugee growing up in Sydney.
The Two of Us: Malaika & Ali
This is a story of Malaika Namdas a medical professional currently based in the United States and Ali Abid a hospital pharmacist who arrived in Australia as a 16-year-old refugee.
